The 10 essential tools you need to work leather
Do you think it is complex to work leather? Nobody said it was easy, but using the following tools will become a much easier job.
It should be noted that depending on the complexity of the product you will need some tools or others, but the essential ones we tell you here.
The basic kit for leather work would be: cutter, scissors, punch, metal ruler, needle, edge bevel tool, special adhesive for flexible joints, awl, sewing lacing chisels and hammer.
Next, we describe what functions you can carry out with each of them.
Cutter or blade: In this case there are special blades for cutting leather, however, at first, a strong cutter may be useful. With it you can cut the pieces that will constitute your product (shoes, bags ...)
Scissors for cutting leather: There are several types of scissors for cutting leather, but we recommend using robust scissors with a serrated edge so that you can use it in both thick leather and softer leather pieces.
Punch: This tool is used to open small clean holes. It can be used on belts, bags, shoes and other leather products that require it.
Metal ruler: We advise that the ruler be made of steel so as not to damage it when working with the cutter and blades.
Needle: The needle should be special for leather and will depend on the sewing you are going to make, however, the saddle needle is the most common.
Edge bevel Tool: This tool will be used to make beveled edges that are rounded. It is widely used in supplements made with thick skin.
Special adhesive for flexible joints: It is an effective glue for the manufacture of bags and shoes, in this way, they are not rigid due to the use of inadequate adhesives
Awl: It is used to make holes where the needle will subsequently pass with the thread. It is necessary to be able to sew the leather by hand.
Sewing Lacing Chisels: This instrument will guide you when it comes to sewing, since its function is to mark lines where you will then have to sew.
Hammer: It is used in crafts to put rivets.
